The Department of Science offers the following Master Programs:

Astrophysics

This structured two-year program offers you the opportunity to learn about the universe and apply your knowledge of physics in a vibrant and fast developing area of science. The first semester is spent on core astronomy courses, including stellar structure and evolution and galactic dynamics. In the second semester, you will begin work on a degree project under the supervision of internationally well regarded professors, and this project continues over three semesters. You will also take four more courses broadening your knowledge of the most exciting areas of modern astrophysics such as exoplanets and the early universe.

Atmospheric Sciences and Biogeochemical Cycles

The program is multidisciplinary and offers a versatile education in atmospheric sciences, taught by leading scientists within the field. It will provide you with a deeper understanding of general atmospheric science, biogeochemical cycles, and processes in land-ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. You will gain knowledge of a broad range of topics within fields such as physical phenomena, atmospheric chemistry, meteorology, physical geography and ecology. You will also learn how to use advanced computational and laboratory-based methods and gain experience in field measurements and operations.

Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. It combines biology, computer science and statistics to analyze this data. New technologies in genomics and proteomics have revolutionized modern research in biology and medicine during the past decade. Scientific discovery now relies heavily on efficient handling and analysis of the enormous amount of data generated from wet lab experiments. The Bioinformatics program trains students from different fields in the computational analysis of biological data.

Biology, Animal Ecology

On the Master`s program in Animal Ecology you will learn how to analyze and understand evolutionary processes at the level of genes, individuals and populations. You will achieve skills in analyzing and understanding how evolutionary and ecological processes form appearance, physiology and behavior in animals. You will also learn how to analyze costs and benefits of different traits and how these are optimized to form reproductive and survival strategies. We offer an excellent research environment, particularly in topics such as animal migration, molecular ecology, life history trade-offs, disease resistance in natural populations and host-parasite interactions. You will use modern field and laboratory methods in studies of ecological and evolutionary issues applied on animals in basic research, as well as applied conservation-related research. Special emphasis is on birds as model systems.

Biology, Aquatic Ecology

This Master’s program provides knowledge on current theories and models of aquatic ecosystems, the relation between watershed, atmosphere, lakes and streams, interactions between humankind and aquatic ecosystems, and water management. Practical training in laboratory and field methodology is also emphasized. Some of the courses contain week-long excursions where practical field studies are made; from hypotheses and preparations, via sampling, analyzing samples and data, and finally writing a report and perform an oral presentation.

Biology, Conservation Biology

On the Master´s program in Conservation Biology, you will learn how to use modern ecology and genetics within management and restoration, as well as in the study of the loss of biological diversity.

Features of the program:

  • Global and regional aspects of biodiversity and restoration ecology
  • Population ecology as a tool in practical conservation biology
  • Analytical methods in conservation biology
  • Close connections to research in an international environment

Biology, Plant Science

An understanding of the mechanisms that shape and modify plant diversity is of fundamental importance for all biological disciplines. This is the subject for you – if you are interested in plant ecology, systematics, evolution and biodiversity. You will learn about the mechanisms that are involved in the evolution of new plant species and the factors that control plant diversity and the distribution of plant species. You will come to understand the way in which mating systems and population structure influence gene flow and genetic diversity in plants. You will find out about how plants interact with other organisms and their ability to adapt to environmental change. At the same time, you will gain practical experience of ecological and systematic methodology.

Chemistry, Biochemistry

Understanding proteins is central to understanding and solving both medical and biochemistry related problems on the molecular level. This program explores the molecular structures and functional mechanisms of a large number of proteins. Graduates from the program will master methods of cloning, expression and purification of proteins, and a number of specialized techniques for analyzing proteins. They will also be able to use and understand primary scientific publications, and have the ability to independently plan, carry out and critically evaluate experiments.

Chemistry, Physical Chemistry

The purpose of the program is to give you a broad and fundamental knowledge in the fields of physical, theoretical chemistry and chemical physics. Students develop advanced laboratory skills, profound theoretical comprehension of fundamental mechanisms and good understanding of practical applications. Special emphasis is given to an unbroken line of understanding, from quantum mechanical description of atoms and molecules to complex supramolecular structures, as well as their industrial and biological applications.

Chemistry, Synthetic and Analytical Chemistry

The program provides you with the opportunity to acquire an advanced level of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills within the fields of analytical, organic, organometallic and coordination chemistry. Through a combination on of advanced courses and a Master’s degree project or projects, you are given the opportunity to specialize in the fields mentioned. The Master’s degree project must correspond to at least 30 ECTS credits. Studies build on a previous grounding in chemistry and enable you to develop the ability to apply independent ideas to issues and problems in chemistry or its neighboring fields.

About Program

The world is rapidly changing, thus offering new challenges for architecture. These challenges concern everything from densification of cities and sustainability to new technologies and how they affect the way we design and build. Lund University, located in the dynamic Copenhagen–Malmö region, is well known for its competence and knowledge, and offers superb resources for studying these matters in a broader context. The program combines best practice with advanced research, thus educating students to become highly skilled professionals who are competitive at an international level. Teaching contains both theoretical and hands-on projects aiming to find future-focused solutions to real-world issues. The program features international collaboration as well as locally active professionals. The process of working/learning consists of a mixture of workshops, critiques, tutorials with invited guests (both international and local) and longer projects that will be exhibited to a public audience.

The objectives of the Master’s program in Architecture are:

  • to offer a broad education in architecture with possible specialization within two main fields (see below)
