The Department of Media and Communication offers the following Bachelor Programs:
Film Production BA (HONS)
If you are passionate about film and storytelling through images, and always wondered what all the people in the credits of a film are actually doing, then this course is most certainly for you. This hands-on course, recognised by industry professionals, will enable you to produce films to professional standards, write production proposals and give presentations. Our graduates regularly appear in the credits of major TV and cinema releases, win awards at prestigious film festivals and the Royal Television Society, and have their scripts developed into independent film productions.
Filmmaking BA (HONS)
UCLan Filmmaking offers scope to develop both personal creative expression and professional level skills in a supportive and inclusive environment. Recognized by industry professionals, the program delivers “strong emphasis on practical and vocational development” (Diarmid Scrimshaw, Producer ‘Tyrannosaur’) and prepares “exceptionally professional” students (Derrin Schlesinger, Producer, ‘This is England’, ‘Four Lions’, ‘Babylon’). By helping students maximize their learning potential, this progressive program has seen students and graduates regularly appear in the credits of major TV and cinema releases. UCLan Film Production students have been Oscar nominated in 2014 and won the Royal Television Society awards more times than any other university in the North West.
Fine Art BA (HONS)
The Fine Art degree course will introduce you to the dynamic and exciting world of contemporary art practice, developing your ideas and exploring media as the course progresses. You can work in traditional or new media – from painting to performance art – with access to our extensive facilities including wood, metal and plaster workshops, digital media suite, installation spaces, drawing studio and gallery. You can choose to specialize or work in a broad-based way – there is no preferred ‘house style’ – and we encourage you to work independently and develop as an artist to a professional level.
Media Production BSC (HONS)
Do you want to explore media production and technologies across video, audio, graphics, multimedia and TV? If you aim to become a flexible and multi-disciplined media practitioner, then this practical course is perfect for you. Based in our state-of-the-art Media Factory, you’ll combine knowledge of technical systems and processes with an awareness of industry practice. You will have multiple opportunities to be creative, producing a body of work that will showcase the breadth of your diverse craft skills. Through engaging briefs, and with the support of caring and enthusiastic lecturers, you will develop the skills to help you launch your own career in media production.
Multimedia Journalism BA (HONS)
The journalism industry is more varied than ever, but whether it’s words, sounds, images or video– it’s still about professional, trained journalists telling stories that matter. Music Production and Performance BA (HONS)
Music Production and Performance at UCLan provides the skills, experience, and guidance to develop and sustain careers in the dynamic industry of music. Our state-of-the-art facilities and staff expertise offer an exciting environment for students to develop existing, and discover new techniques in music production and performance. Creativity, innovation, and excellence are at the core of the program with students cultivating knowledge, skills and techniques in areas of music composition, songwriting, recording, production, sound design, performance, research, and career development.
Music Theatre BA (HONS)
Delivered by industry professionals, including visiting directors and musical directors, this unique and mainly vocational course equips students with fundamental performance and creative skills, ensuring a solid foundation for a range of careers within Music Theatre and the Performing Arts. The program includes Musical Theatre and New Music Theatre strands, ensuring an holistic training and diverse performing experience, supported with academic rigor. Students take part in a full-scale musical theatre production in each year, and a major devising project in 2nd and 3rd year.
